Eindhoven may not immediately come to mind as a high-tech hub, but the Dutch city wants to position itself as a center for deep-tech in Europe.

The Eindhoven University of Technology, the High Tech Campus Eindhoven and local companies like ASML and Philips are looking at initiatives across Europe and applying what they have learned to the strategy of the region. Philips started in Eindhoven in 1891 and played no small role in the community's ambitions to become a technology center.

Eindhoven produces a large number of patents per year considering its small population and has been home to an overwhelming number of hardware startups. The local high tech campus, for example, has a high hardware focus.

Our survey participants consider the city to be strong in areas such as photonics, robotics, medical technology, materials science, deep tech, automotive technology, sustainability technology, medical technology, big data, hardware and precision engineering. They are looking for more mature startups and scale-ups that focus on AI and hard tech.

Eindhoven is considered to be weaker in fintech and consumer goods products and exists in a small region with limited global visibility.

Over the next five years, one respondent said: “Eindhoven will have developed into the second largest technology ecosystem in the Netherlands after Amsterdam. At European level, Eindhoven will have entered the top 10. "
