but forking doesnt have to be as result of contributor's work being denied. It can just happen for no other reason which of course is a taboo in the open source community.

If Grandma May insists, in the licence, on us offering to “upstream”, then the software is not Open Source (according to the Open Source definition, or Free Software according to the free software definition).
Most of this is a description of a development model not of open-source.
I really enjoyed this video – a great explanation of a not-so-easy to understand concept.
