When I started to write Retirement Renaissance, I was trying to figure out why I wasn’t totally enthused with retirement. My expectations of retirement did not match my feelings. I began to realize that my job and career had been far more important to my psychological wellbeing than I had imagined. I missed the sense of satisfaction and the feeling of contribution that was a routine part of my daily business life. I missed my colleagues. I missed the sights and sounds of the business arena. In short, I realized I had left something that I really enjoyed. I was disenchanted because I had not replaced the psychological requirements that my job had provided. It was from these early feelings that I developed the motivation to explore the realm of retirement planning. I read numerous books about retirement planning. I quickly learned that most books on the subject deal almost exclusively with financial planning and my problem was more practical; I needed to find a true, comprehensive retirement plan. When I couldn’t find the answers, I decided to see if I could figure it out on my own. I was a management consultant by profession so I saw it as an opportunity to solve a problem. I plunged into the project and many months later the result was the Retirement Renaissance. You have the opportunity to do whatever you want to do in retirement. The most important thing is that you have to plan for what you want to do, especially how to deal with the psychological loss of your job and career and the sense of wellbeing and self-esteem it provided. Retirement will not wait for you, it will happen whether you are prepared or not. Just follow my advice and prepare a retirement plan, with your spouse or partner. I guarantee that you will thank me in a few years from now. Incidentally, after I wrote the book, I decided to go back to work, part-time, because I really enjoyed my work. My present guideline about work is that I will continue as long as two conditions are present; first, that my clients think that I add value; and second, and that I am willing to roll out of bed in the morning and go to work. When either or both of these guidelines aren’t there, I will retire, again.
