How To Start A Hair Business From Home

Hey, welcome back to the Six Figure Mastermind.

Marianne DeNovellis here.

I don't know if you know this but one of the best hair stylists featured by CosmoProf started her hair business right at home.

I'm going to walk you through an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>howan> an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> do exactly that.

So, stay tuned.

So, you're like me and you want to work from home.

Maybe you have a little bit of that entrepreneurial spirit kicking you in the pants, right? It's time to an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>startan> considering how to an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>startan> a hair business or a hair salon right out of your house.

Now, I have to tell you, my favorite stylist started out of her house and she went on to be on the cover of CosmoProf.

And she knows Guy Tang.

She was a judge at many of his events.

She's incredible.

And she's got incredible talent which is why I go to her.

But it started out of her house.

And in fact, I remember one time I had a broken leg.

And this girl she's like, "Girl, you've still got to get your hair done, you still need to take care of you.

I will carry you up these stairs and get you in the salon and get you taken care of.

" And that's one of the reasons I just love her.

So, let's walk through the basics of how to get started.

First things first, before you consider opening any type of business, you need to get licensed in cosmetology school.

Now, you pick the school.

I can't give you advice on that but you do need to come away with that school with a license and cosmetology.

You're getting involved with heavy chemicals, you're getting involved with styling.

And guys, if you don't have a talent or a skill for the hair industry, you're not going to last very long in this business, okay? So, please get licensed, please get instructed and keep up on your licensure.

Next thing you need to do is be insured, okay? And you can get an insurance policy from, you know, most major insurance firms.

And it's maybe what? $400 a year for a million dollars of coverage.

Just get yourself an L-L-C business policy to cover you in case something weird happens or someone decides that they want to sue you.

We hope that doesn't happen but you want to be covered in case it does, okay? So, get licensed, get insured.

The next thing you need is a space in your home.

Now, that you may be thinking, "Now, I don't have a space in my home.

I don't have a space with a separate entrance.

I don't have a room with plumbing in it.

" Guys, if you really want to get started with this, you will find a way.

The lady that I've been going an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> for my hair for the past several years.

I went an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan>, like I said, in her home.

it was a town home and we would go upstairs to her spare bedroom.

Guys, she an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>startan>ed out with carpet on the floor.

She started out with no plumbing in the room, whatsoever.

And with just a chair in front of a mirror that she had bought for probably from Ikea or something.

Over time, as she an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> develop more skills, she started to develop more clients, I watched as this room transformed.

The carpet got ripped out, they put in laminate flooring, she got a second chair then she hired another employee and then she an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>startan>ed an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> get the attention of Guy Tang and CosmoProf.

And then she started to get really successful.

I remember when she moved out of her home inan style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> her own brand-new studio space.

And I remember when that studio space turned inan style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> 2 studio spaces.

She an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>startan>ed hiring more and more employees.

And now, she successfully runs 2 out of the home studios where she can create her own schedule and those Studios kind of run themselves and she can be home with her baby whenever she wants an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> be, okay? So, consider an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>howan> fast and an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>howan> big you want to scale this.

You can do it from home and just stay at home if you want to.

Or you can scale it big like my friend Kristina has, okay? So, in your home, if you don't have plumbing, if you don't have everything that you need, feel free to MacGyver it.

Like make it up safely, safely.

Make it up as you go along.

My friend Kristina, when she was doing my hair, she literally had no sink in there that was plumbed.

She just had a bucket underneath a vanity that she maybe got from Home Depot that had a sink in there.

The plumbing was pumped in from water that she had to walk into the room.

And then she had an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> walk the basin out of the room and clean it and dump it.

I mean she went through the whole thing.

So, don't let that be an excuse.

Don't let I-don't-have-space be an excuse.

Don't let I-don't-have-supplies be an excuse.

Start with what you've got.

And then build upon that and grow with it and let it grow with you.

You need an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> establish a style, if you're going to have a hair business out of your home.

I can guarantee you Instagram is going an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> be your best friend on this.

So, establish a style that you want an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> have associated with your business.

Now, my friend Kristina she is all about metallics.

And she's all about the shine of the hair and the body of the hair.

You know, you can see if you check out Instagram, if you check out intrepid studio salon on Instagram, you're going to see that she has a flair that's unique to her.

That it's fun, it's whimsical, it's trendy, it's very easy to maintain, it's simple.

She's got a unique flair and a unique skill set for that.

So, when you start doing hair, it's okay an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> get experience in every little arena but then you're going an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> find your favorite one.

Maybe you love doing kids hair.

Maybe you love like doing the man's hair.

Like, doing the beard and the whole like precision cut with the men's haircuts.

Maybe you love doing colors and creating these locks of unicorn hair.

You know, you're going an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> create and find your own playground when it comes to that.

And nourish that.

Let that explode and blow it up on Instagram.

So that people think that specific style, you're the first name that comes to their mind.

Remember, before you do anything else, you've got to have a way for people an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> pay you.

So, before your cusan style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan>mers you can walk in the door, you got an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> have what's called a P-O-S or a point-of-sale system.

Now, you can use square, you can use stripe, you can use PayPal, you can use Venmo.

Whatever you want to do.

If you really want an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> get professional with it, I would suggest getting a merchant account which is a separate account that business owners use an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> process transactions.

What I really would recommend is well.

Kind of as a bonus on an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan>p of everything else.

Is an appointment scheduler.

You know, before your client leaves they should have their next hair appointment scheduled.

Whether it be 6 weeks out.

Whether it be 3 months out.

However often you're seeing them.

Book them in your calendar and have an auto text responder like easy text or something that comes with your point-of-sale system.

To send them reminder text about their appointment.

When you do that, be sure that you are respectful of your own time.

If a client is cancelling, tell them that they need an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> give you 24 hours notice.

And then if they don't, then you take a portion of their deposit and just keep it, okay? Set yourself up some clear established rules, so as your time becomes more valuable, as you keep getting more clients, you can respect your own space and.

Because you're going to get a whole gamut of clients at first.

And then you're going to narrow it down an style=”text-decoration: underline;”>toan> the people who just love your niche but you can't be bending over backwards if it's like cramping your style.

And if it's not profitable for your business.

So, set up a point-of-sale system, set up a reminder text system for scheduling.

Once you've got that, your space, your skill set, you're just going to blossom from there and rock this industry.
